Case Study: Team Dynamics
Would you like to be able to create better, more effective teams? This week Mary uses Bruce Tuckman’s 5 Stages of Team Development to point out how an organization can build and support a volunteer fundraising committee effectively.
Mary describes how every team or group goes through the stages of Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning. She also talks about how preparing for these stages can lead to success.
Organization A
In this scenario, Organization A recruits talented volunteers to a fundraising event committee but doesn’t plan for team dynamics. The staff assumes that the committee will be productive because the members are talented individuals. The team Forms and Storms, gets stuck and is unable to be productive.
Organization B
Organization B anticipates the stages of team development. The staff who recruits volunteers gives them each a role and helps establish individual tasks. The staff also leads the team through an exercise to create a set of group assumptions for behaviors. Lastly, when the group enters the Storming stage, the staff member is prepared to provide further support. The team is then able to thrive.
